Volkswagen is all set to launch the most affordable hatchback in India. Expected to hit the Indian roads in 2015, the Volkswagen up is most likely to be priced between Rs.3.5 and 4 lakh. The car is looking to rival the likes of Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, the Hyundai i10 and the Datsun Go. This mini hatchback is designed to be the perfect urban car carrying 4 people in style.

Engine and performance
The Volkswagen Up is expected to be powered by a1.2 litre power-train capable of generating a maximum power of 75 bhp and a peak torque of 183 Nm where as the diesel variant will be fitted with a 0.8 litre turbocharged engine that produces 50 bhp of power, offering a maximum torque of 101 Nm. The power is distributed to the wheels through a 6-speed manual transmission. However, an optional automatic transmission is also expected. All the concept cars showcased in Auto Shows produced very good results in terms of power, acceleration and driving range, The fuel efficiency has to be somewhere between 17and 20 kmpl.
The bonnet looks similar to that of Matiz or Nano because of the small length. The front fascia of the car is simple, but elegant with the bold VW logo in chrome. The Volkswagen lineage is retained, with its neat bumper and sleek horizontal shape between the lamps. The side profile looks a bit extended. The 18 inch wheels, the powerful C pillar and the extended windows enhance this look. The rear has got a dual purpose tailgate that covers the whole rear area except the bumper. The hatchback is 3679 mm long,1631 mm wide and 1540 mm tall, and the wheelbase measures 2560 mm.
The unique feature is that the Up comes with two monitors in the dashboard- one shows speed, fuel level and CO2 emissions where as the other comprises climate system, navigation and infotainment system. The upholstery is a combination of fabric and leather. The Volkswagen Up provides seating for 4 passengers and the interior is spacious enough for comfortable ride. There are two seat-rows and the rear seat is bench type. Besides, the seats are positioned high in order to ensure maximum comfort in the cabin. The seats can be folded or removed so as to make room for luggage. A boot space of 220 litres is also offered in the Up.
Features and specifications
The Volkswagen Up is expected to come with standard safety features such as central locking, impact beams, rear defogger and dual air bags. The mini hatchback is believed to be fitted with front disc and rear drum brakes and suspension would be more than conventional. Excellent maneuverability is one thing that makes the car stand apart. Handling would be a pleasurable experience thanks to its suspension and compactness.
