Kali Chaudas 2023

Often used interchangeably with Narak Chaturdashi, Kali Chaudas (Hindi: काली चौदस, Gujarati: કાલી ચૌદશ) is part of Diwali festival and comes a day before Diwali. Unlike Narak Chaturdashi which is celebrated throughout India, Kali Chaudas is most popular in Gujarat followed by Rajasthan and Maharashtra.

Kali Chaudas is considered the day Goddess Mahakali defeated Asura king Rakthabija in a fierce battle.

Difference between Kali Chaudas & Narak Chaturdashi

Kali Chaudas falls on the Krishna Paksh Chaturthi tithi of Kartik Month on the Hindu calendar, which is same as Sud Chaudas of Kartak month as per Gujarati Calendar. This is interesting as Narak Chaturdashi is also observed on the same day. However, what makes Narak Chaturdashi and Kali Chaudas sometimes come on different dates is the precondition that Kali Chaudas rituals should be performed on the day when Chaturdashi tithi prevails during midnight ie., Nishitha Kaal (3rd 1/5th part of ratrimana to be precise). Whereas, Narak Chaturdashi is chosen as the day when moonrise occurs before sunrise during chaturdashi tithi.

Another difference between the two observances is the Hindu literature associated with the annihilation of 2 Ashuras. Kali chaudas commemorates the defeat of Asura Rakthabij in the hands of Goddess Kali whereas, Narak Chaturdashi is the celebration of the victory of Lord Krishna over Narakasura.

An idol of Goddess Kali

Most Hindus regard Kali Chaudas with fearful veneration and the night of Kali chaudas is often considered highly inauspicious and dangerous. Some people believe that black magic, spells and tantric puja is most potent on this day. It is not too uncommon to see people offering puja and sacrifices at creamatoriums on the night of Kali Chaudas in order to ward off any ill effects of black magic and to win over evil.
