January 20 : The horror genre has always been popular in Bollywood. The year 2021 will also see an array of horror movies churned out by Bollywood filmmakers, some also have a touch of comedy in them.
Horror genre fans have already been treated with the first horror film of the year. Ram Gopal Varma is back with the genre that he excels in. The filmmaker’s spine chilling horror film 12 ’o’clock, a psychological horror thriller, had hit the theatres on January 8. The film stars Mithun Chakraborty, Makrand Deshpandey, Divya Jagdale, Manav Kaul, Ali Azgar, Ashish Vidyarthi, Dalip Tahil, Flora Saini and Debutant Krishna Gautam. The film has been bankrolled by Varma’s Company Production.
Vishal Furia is coming up with the Hindi remake of his hit Marathi horror-mystery film Lapachhapi with Nushrat Bharucha in the lead. The film Chhorii is bankrolled by Abundantia Entertainment and Crypt TV. According to Nushrat, Chhorii is a “shockingly scary” film. It is about a couple living in a haunted house. The film rolled in November 2020 in Madhya Pradesh.
Gurmmeet Singh is directing a horror-comedy film starring Katrina Kaif, Siddhant Chaturvedi, and Ishaan Khatter. The film that has already gone on the floors, is bankrolled by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani under their banner Excel Entertainment. About the film, Siddhant had once wrote on social media, “Triple trouble in bhoot world! Darna allowed hai, as long as you're laughing along the way.”
Vivek Oberoi is coming up with his second production venture, Rosie: The Saffron Chapter. Based on strange events that actually happened in Gurugram, the film is a horror-thriller and will be helmed by Vishal Mishra. TV actree Shweta Tiwari’s daughter Palak Tiwari will debut in the film.
The comedy horror film Roohi Afzana is helmed by Hardik Mehta and backed by Dinesh Vijan under the banner Maddock Films. Starring Rajkummar Rao, Janhvi Kapoor, Varun Sharma, and Alexx O'Nell, the film showcases the story of a ghost who abducts brides on their honeymoons. Janhvi plays a double role in the film. Announced in March 2019, the film kicked off in June 2019 in Agra. The film was set to release in June 2020, but due to COVID-19 pandemic, production work was interrupted.
Bhoot Police is also a horror comedy film directed by Pavan Kirpalani and starring Saif Ali Khan, Arjun Kapoor, Yami Gautam, Jacqueline Fernandez, and Javed Jaffrey. Bankrolled by Ramesh Taurani and Akshai Puri, the film is expected to release during summer 2021.
