January 22 : Vidya Balan’s short film Natkhat has qualified for Oscar 2021. While the news came in a week back, Vidya, who turned a producer with this film, took to social media to express her feelings of joy and ecstasy.
Taking to her Instagram handle, the Kahani actress shared a poster of the film and wrote, “So so so thrilled that our film #NATKHAT is in the RACE FOR THE #OSCARS2021 after a 2020 filled with prestigious international film festivals.”
Natkhat, a 33-minute short film, is in the race for the Academy Award for Best Short Film (Live Action). Directed by Shaan Vyas, and produced by Ronnie Screwvala and Vidya Balan, Natkhat sends the message out that home is where we learn the values which shape us and make us who we are. It is about a story where a mother, played by Vidya Balan notices her young, school-going son Sonu, essayed by Sanika Patel, gravitating towards misogyny, and disregard women just like the men of her family. The film revolves around the mother-son relationship, and how a mother educates her son about gender equality.
Natkhat premiered on YouTube on June 2, 2020, as part of the We Are One: A Global Film Festival. It was screened and won the German Star of India Award at the Indian Film Festival Stuttgart in July 2020. The film was also screened at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne on October 23, 2020. The short film was also invited for the London Indian Film Festival in London and Birmingham in September 2020, and the South Asian Film Festival - Orlando/Florida Film Festival in October 2020.
Meanwhile, Vidya Balan will be next seen in Sherni, which will be directed by Amit Masurkar and produced by Bhushan Kumar. The film also stars Vijay Raaz.
