January 28 : Bollywood has made films in all sorts of genres, including sports. Over the years, many sports films have won the hearts of the audiences. Blockbusters like Aamir Khan’s Dangal, late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s M S Dhoni and many others are iconic and epic as they are based on the life stories of great athletes.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many blockbuster sports movies, which were slated to be released in 2020, will now take on 2021 by storm. Let’s checkout these movies.
Ranveer Singh in ’83
Ranveer Singh’s much-awaited film ’83, which was slated to be released in 2020, has been pushed to 2021. Helmed by Kabir Khan and jointly bankrolled by Khan, Vishnu Vardhan Induri, Deepika Padukone and Sajid Nadiadwala, and co-distributed by Reliance Entertainment, the flick features Ranveer Singh as cricketer Kapil Dev, along with Deepika Padukone, who plays his wife Romi Bhatia. The film will be a glorious retelling of the 1983 Cricket World Cup when India picked up the trophy for the first time. While no date has been fixed for its release, cricket fans are eagerly waiting its release.
Ajay Devgn in Maidaan
Maidaan starring Ajay Devgn is a biographical sports film based on the golden era of Indian football that started from 1952 to 1962. Ajay Devgn plays the role of the popular football coach Syed Abdul Rahim. Directed by Amit Sharma and produced by Zee Studios in collaboration with Bayview Projects LLP, Maidaan is scheduled for a worldwide release in cinemas on October 15, 2021, coinciding with Dussehra weekend. Maidaan may now clash at the theatres with S S Rajamouli's RRR, which also stars Ajay Devgn.
Shahid Kapoor in Jersey
Shahid Kapoor has recently wrapped the shoot of Jersey, the Hindi version of the Telugu film that was released in April 2019. The remake has been directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, who had also directed the original. Shahid stars in the film as a cricketer besides Mrunal Thakur, Pankaj Kapur and an ensemble cast. Presented by Allu Aravind and produced by Aman Gill, Dil Raju and Suryadevara Naga Vamsi, the film successfully wrapped up on December 14, 2020. Pushed from 2020, the film will now release in theatres on November 5, 2021, coinciding with Diwali.
Taapsee in Rashmi Rocket
Taapsee Pannu stars in Rashmi Rocket as a girl from a Gujarat village, who is a fast runner. This film follows her journey as a runner and how she overcomes various obstacles to become an international athlete. Directed by Akarsh Khurana and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, Neha Anand and Pranjal Khandhdiya, the film also features Priyanshu Painyuli and Abhishek Banerjee. Rashmi Rocket has just been wrapped, and the makers are yet to announce its release date.
Parineeti Chopra in Saina
Parineeti Chopra plays the badminton player Saina Nehwal in the biographical sports film Saina. Directed by Amole Gupte and produced by Bhushan Kumar, the film is yet to get its release date. Earlier, Shraddha Kapoor was playing Nehwal's role, and had also started filming in September 2018, but due to date clash she opted out of the film. The buzz is that the Saina Nehwal biopic may take the digital route since theatres have still not picked up its full occupancy.
Farhan Akhtar in Toofan
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s directorial Toofan stars Farhan Akhtar as a national level boxer, while Paresh Rawal plays the role of his coach. The film also stars Mrunal Thakur. Toofan, which was completed in March 2020, will now release this year. Written by Anjum Rajabali, the film is an endearing love story of a boxer. It is not a real life story but about a fictitious character, and set among the lower middle class. There’s no announcement about its release date yet.
