March 02 : A magistrates’ court in Mumbai issued a bailable warrant against Kangana Ranaut in a criminal complaint filed by veteran lyricist Javed Akhtar alleging defamation. After the actress did not appear before the court, the warrant was issued against her. The court had issued the summon to Kangana in February 2021.
Javed Akhtar’s advocate Vrinda Grover urged the court to issue the warrant as Ranaut did not comply with the court order neither her advocate filed any application seeking an exemption for her.
The veteran lyricist had alleged in his complaint that the Panga actress made defamatory statements against him in an interview on national television. “It is a clear campaign to malign and tarnish the reputation of the complainant (Akhtar) in the eyes of the general public,” the petition read. Akhtar had recorded his statement in January this year. The court had summoned Kangana on the basis of this complaint.
On February 1, 2021, the Mumbai Court after hearing arguments made by lawyer Niranjan Mundergi on behalf of Akhtar, issued a process against Ranaut for offences under sections 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal code pertaining to defamation.
On July 19, while speaking to a national TV channel, Kangana linked Akhtar to the suicide of actor Sushant Singh Rajput. A criminal complaint was filed on November 3 before the Andheri metropolitan magistrate under Sections 499 (defamation) and 500 (punishment for defamation) of the Indian Penal Code.
After Aktar recorded his statement against Rangana last month, the actress took to her Twitter handle and wrote, “Geedaron ka ek jhund aur ek sherni .... mazaa aayega (A herd of jackals and a lioness .... will enjoy.”
Kangana took to her Twitter handle once again and wrote, “I have been conducting meetings at my house, today Aksht Ranaut who founded Manikarnika Films with me also single handedly handling all 700 cases filed on me, insisted that today I attend important meeting regarding Emergency at the office, I wasn’t ready and my heart broke again.”
