Sharing the first poster of the film, Parineeti Chopra, who plays Saina Nehwal in the film, announced the release date. “SAINA! The poster showed a hand reaching out for the shuttlecock. The wristband on the hand bore the colours of the Indian flag. The words “Maar Doongi” can be seen written on the poster, which increases the curiosity of the netizens. Written and directed by Amole Gupte, Saina will get a theatrical release.
Back in 2017, Saina Nehwal took to her Twitter handle and revealed the details of the film on April 26. Earlier, Shraddha Kapoor had signed the film to play the lead role, and had also started shooting in September 2018 after getting her training. But due to some conflicts, the actress backed out of the film, and on March 15, 2019, T-Series’ Bhushan Kumar confirmed that Parineeti Chopra will replace Shraddha Kapoor. In a statement the makers said, "Due to circumstances beyond her control, the actress kept giving other films priority over the national badminton champion’s biopic, so the makers have decided to go ahead with Chopra.” The film will see Manav Kaul playing the role of Pullela Gopichand, who is Saina Nehwal's coach.
Parineeti took intense training in badminton since June 2019. About 12 massive courts were created at the sets to represent the international venues where Sania Nehwal had played. After Parineeti’s film The Girl On The Train was released on an OTT platform recently, reports were rife that Saina may also take the digital route. Saina was slated to hit theatres last summer, but due to the pandemic, the plans were halted. Now finally, Parineeti and Sania Nehwal fans are happy to get the theatrical release date.
