May 04 : After the release of Farhan Akhtar starrer Toofaan was postponed last year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the makers of the film have announced earlier this year that the film will skip theatrical release and start streaming on Amazon Prime Video on May 21. But now with the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic hitting the country, Excel Entertainment that backed the film, has decided to postpone the release of the film further.
Farhan Akhtar, who plays the leading role in the film, took to his Twitter account and wrote, “The situation in India is truly heart-breaking, and we at Excel Entertainment and ROMP Pictures send our thoughts and prayers to everyone affected by the pandemic. In light of the severity of the situation, our focus is completely on the pandemic and on supporting our employees, their families and in helping the wider community. Therefore, we have taken the decision to postpone the release of our film 'Toofaan' until the situation improves. We will issue an update regarding the new release date in due course of time. Please continue to observe Covid Appropriate Behaviour. Also, please register and get vaccinated when it's your turn. On behalf of the entire team of Toofaan, we urge you to Stay Home, Stay Safe and Stay United. Jai Hind," the long statement read.
Helmed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Toofan stars Farhan Akhtar along with Mrunal Thakur, Paresh Rawal, Isha Talwar and others. Akhtar had earlier collaborated with Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra for the hit sports film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag in 2013. It was based on the life of Milkha Singh.
In Toofan, Farhan plays a national-level boxing player. The film was initially slated to release in October 2020 but was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic. Last year, in an interview, Rakeysh had said “Toofan is a story that will motivate and inspire all of us to get out of comfort zones and fight towards achieving our dreams. We cannot wait to present our film to viewers across the globe.” Farhan Akhtar was last seen in The Sky Is Pink in 2019, which also starred Priyanka Chopra.
