June 17 : India is a diverse country with many sects, religions, beliefs and cultures. Amongst, these differences there was a noble man who felt that life needs more meaning and goodness within it. His name was Kabirdas and he soon taught people of the 15th century about the real essence of good living.
When is Kabir Day Jayanti 2019?
On June 17, 2019, his followers celebrate the birthday of Sant Guru Kabirdas. He was said to be born in the 1440s, and so as per that date, it could be 642 years since this great man inspired many people. His birthday falls in the month of Jyestha and on a full moon day as per the Hindu calendar.
History behind the legend Sant Guru Kabirdas
He was raised by a Muslim family during his early years of life. But during his childhood, he was influenced both by the teachings of Islam and Hinduism. That way he voiced out his opinions to his followers in the form of poems. Though Muslim, he borrowed a lot of philosophies from Hinduism.
On Kabir Jayanti, people remember the great man for all the simple teachings he has taught about good living. Since it is believed that he was born in Varanasi, a lot of celebrations and sermons are held, so each generation is reminded of his greatness.
He is said to live a celibate life and later on adopted two children as his own.
Teachings of Kabirdas
He valued the teachings of Hinduism and Islam equally. He advocated the fact that the impressions of God lies in all religions. He encouraged people to practice a life of goodness and unity. The following Dohas were very famous:
“Kaal Kare So Aaj Kar, Aaj Kare So Ab, Pal Mein Pralaya Hoyegi, Bahuri Karega Kab”
“Dukh Mein Sumiran Sab Kare, Sukh Mein Kare Na Koye, Jo Sukh Mein Simran Kare, Toh Dukh Kahe Ko Hoye”
All his poems were in Hindi, and took guidance from various dialects like Braj, and Avadhi. His emphasis was pure love and devotion to his God. Most of his teachings have been absorbed into the Guru Granth Sahib and today people follow these teachings with complete respect.
