JULY 9 : The holy day of Shayani Ekadashi will start from 1.02 am on July 12, 2019, marking the beginning of Chaturmas, the four months of the rainy season. On this day Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi are worshipped, and devotees keep fast and pray all night. Many take vows on this day like giving up a bad habit or fasting on every Ekadashi day.
Shayani Ekadashi, also called Devshayani Ekadashi, is celebrated on Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi. Like other Ekadashis, Shayani Ekadashi also helps to attain salvation, and fulfil all wishes. It gives freedom from sins committed in the past.
This day is also called Harishayani Ekadashi as Vishnu fell asleep for four months. During these four months, the power of sun, moon, and nature decreases. It is, therefore, said that Devshayan has started. Any auspicious work is barred for the next four months because of the weak result of these activities. Lord Vishnu wakes up from sleep on Devuthni Ekadashi. With this, auspicious work begins again.
Ekadashi ends at 12.31 am on July 13, 2019. It is necessary to break the fast within Dwadashi tithi, so one should break the fast early morning. It should be noted that one should not break the fast in the afternoon.
While people with families are suggested to fast on the first day, sanyasis, widows and those who want moksha, are recommended to keep the vrat on the second day. However, many devotees fast on both days.
All preparations of the puja should be done a day before, as Devshayani Ekadashi begins with Dasami tithi. Wake up early, take a bath and wear clean clothes. Install idols of Vishnu and Lakshmi, and recite Vishnu mantra. Also, listen to Devshayani Ekadashi katha.
