August 30 : This year Hartalika Teej falls on September 1. Women observe vrat and worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for their husbands' or would-be husbands' long life and marital bliss. The fasting is quite tough as it is nishivasar nirjala vrat, which means women neither sleep nor drink water during the day. It is ideal to perform puja in the morning during the Pratahkal Hartalika puja muhurat.

It is important for married women to dress up with solah shringar and then do puja and listen to Hartalika katha. These solah shringar include:
- Red sindoor (vermilion)
- Mangalsutra (sacred black beads chain)
- Green bangles
- New red cloth
- Nosepin and earrings
- Payal and mangtika
- New saree
- Flower garland for hair
- Wedding chunri
- Wedding sindhora (the container where marriage sindoor is stored)
You will be surprised to know that besides mythological significance, these sringar items have favourable effect on health. Science has also acknowledged that these have positive effects on the mind and body.

When women decorate their hair with flowers, the fragrance has good effect on their mind and keeps them happy. By applying bindi on the forehead, the third eye is awakened. Bindi has psychological effect and increases self-confidence of women. At the same time, the mind also remains calm and relaxed.
According to anatomy, the place where the vermilion is applied is just above the marmastha, which is extremely soft. Applying vermilion protects this area. In addition, sindoor contains some metals that reduces wrinkles on the face and regulates electrical stimulation in a woman's body.
The mangalsutra is considered sacred amongst the Hindus. It is believed that the air flowing through the mangalsutra and its beads strengthens the immune system. According to ayurveda, wearing gold around the neck keeps the chest and heart healthy. The black beads protect women from evils.
