HELSINKI, April 11, 2014 - A researcher cleans the tanks in the aquarium laboratory of the University of Helsinki, Finland, April 10, 2014. It is usually believed that there needs to be genetic variation for evolution to happen. A research funded by Academy of Finland tries to find out if there are alternatives to go around the "genetic constraints". In Finnish Lapland, there are populations of three-spined sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) which lack genetic variation to respond to natural selection for reduced bony armor in the usual manner. 400 samples were collected from the wild by a research team led by Dr. Tuomas Leinonen, and reared in controlled conditions in an aquarium laboratory in the University of Helsi
