This year marks the 50th anniversary of the new Elisabeth Bridge which was handed over on Nov. 21, 1964. It is named after Elisabeth of Bavaria, a popular queen of Hungary and empress of Austria, who was assassinated in 1898. The original Elisabeth Bridge was built between 1897 and 1903, and was blown up by retreating Wehrmacht sappers on Jan. 18, 1945. The bridge situated at the narrowest part of the Danube in the Budapest area connects Buda and Pest.
