Inspired by Chinese gardens of Suzhou, Liu Fang Yuan, or the Garden of Flowing Fragrance, is one of the largest Chinese-style gardens overseas. In 2019, while the bilateral relationship between China and the United States is going through some rough patches at the national level, wide-ranging exchanges and cooperation at the subnational level have not been losing steam.
The festival is also a 2019 signature event of the China National Tourist Office in New York. The second annual New York City Winter Lantern Festival kicked off on Nov. 20, as thousands of colorful Chinese lanterns lit up a 10-acre area of the city's Staten Island borough.
