Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov was a Russian weapons designer born on Nov. 10, 1919, Kurya, Siberia. Kalashnikov worked as a tank mechanic in the Soviet military during the 2nd World War. Kalashnikov got wounded during the German invasion of the USSR in 1941. During his recovery, a frequent topic of discussion among his fellow hospital patients was the inferiority of the Soviet battlefield rifles. Thus inspired, Kalashnikov spent the remainder of his six-month medical leave creating a prototype for a new submachine gun. He invented the AK-47 (automatic Kalashnikov Model 1947) in 1949.
