People living in Dayanagari village in Dehradun are facing a severe shortage of water. Women are forced to collect water from pits on the dry river bed, as there are no alternative sources and the once freely-flowing river has reduced to a trickle. Handpumps don't work as the water table has gone down rapidly. Environmentalists say rampant construction on the riverbed coupled with heavy mining of sand has led to this situation.
