The Supreme Court has directed the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala not to be adversarial over the water discharge issue of Mullaperiyar Dam as the flood situation in Kerala is grave. They have been told to work in harmony. Kerala considers the water level in the dam to be unsafe and wants the tamil Nadu government, which operates it, to start safely releasing water in small amounts to reduce overflow and deluge downstream. Tamil Nadu insists the Mullaperiyar Dam is safe. Kerala and Tamil Nadu have been in conflict over the dam which was built under an accord drawn up in 1886 between then Maharaja of Travancore and the British. Under this pact, Tamil Nadu operates the dam.
