A green cover is posing threat to the native flora on Chennai's Tirusulam Hills. If left unchecked, invasive species found in the green cover at the Tirusulam Hills can affect or even alter its ecosystem. The invasion by 'alien' species came to light when former director of Zoological Survey of India K Venkataraman visited the hillock to study bird hits. He said, 'About 30% of the hillock has been infested by six invasive species. While Mexican creepers can easily outgrow native species and ultimately bring them down, no biodiversity will survive on lantana-infested land. Change in the ecological set-up will in turn cause deterioration of soil quality.'
