60 days after the central and state government’s fishing ban was imposed, business returned to the Kasimedu harbour of Chennai on June 23 as the ban ended. The first day of business proved to be beneficial to the buyer’s as varieties like pomfret, sardine and tuna could be found at cheaper retail prices. Among the 200 trawlers that had been out for a week, none returned with squids or shrimps which are in high demand on Kerala since the fishing ban. Market hopes the gill-netters out in the sea since last week will bring them.
