Following Congress party’s petition, challenging the Election Commission of India’s decision to hold operate bypolls for two Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat. The Supreme Court is set to hear Congress party’s plea on the matter on June 25. Earlier a bench of Justices Deepak Gupta and Surya Kant had asked the EC to file a response as to why the simultaneous polls could not be conducted as pleaded by the Congress petition. Congress argues that holding separate elections for the two seats would deny the party one of the seats that it is entitled to according to its strength in the state assembly. The two seats fell vacant after BJP chief Amit Shah and Smriti Irani got elected to the Lok Sabha in recently held general elections.
