The Income-Tax department raided several diagnostic centres in Bengaluru during which it uncovered a nexus with doctors worth several hundred crores. Documents show that doctors were paid referral fees for prescribing tests for patients which ranged from between 20% to 35% for various tests and scans. The payment made by diagnostic centres were disguised as marketing expense in the book of accounts. The referral fees from only one diagnostic centre was found to be to the tune of Rs 200 crores.
