Former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt is sentenced to life imprisonment by the Jamnagar Sessions Courtunder Indian Penal Code in a case related to 1990 custodial death. Bhatt, a 1988-batch IPS officer, is at present in judicial custody in a 22-year old drug planting case of Banaskantha, in a Palanpur jail. In the 1990 case, Bhatt had detained 150 people during a communal riot in Jamjodhpur town. The case pertains to the death of one person, who was among more than hundred persons detained and later released in Jamjodhpur town of Jamnagar district during a communal riot. After they were released, the man had died in hospital. The man's had filed a case of custodial torture and death against Bhatt, the then additional superintendent of police, constable Jhala and six other policemen, alleging that the victim was severely thrashed and tortured in custody.
