Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 • Price, Variants & Specifications
Maruti Suzuki launched a new facelift of one of the best selling cars in the small car segment, the Alto 800. Alto 800 gets the legacy and combination of two of the most important cars well acclaimed by the consumers in the Indian subcontinent - Maruti 800 and Alto. Maruti 800 was launched 26 years ago while Alto made its debut 9 years back. Maruti's new launch, Alto 800, has all the advanced safety, comfort features with a futuristic design and weighs lighter than the older versions. The car now comes with a fuel economy of 24.7kmpl with the new 800cc BSIV compliant petrol engine. Maruti Suzuki is also offering a CNG Variant with a mileage of 33.44 kmpl.
The price range starts from Rs 2.59 lakh(Ex-Showroom) for the Standard Petrol variant to Rs.3.83 lakh(Ex-Showroom) high-end variant. The on-road price of the car may differ state-wise depending on the individual tax regime of the specific state.
Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 comes in four different variants: Base, VX, LX and Lxi with two fuel options: petrol and CNG. The fuel tank has a capacity of 35 liters.
Engine and Transmission
Maruti Alto 800 comes with a 3-cylinder and a very impressive 0.8-litre F8D engine. The engine is very peppy and it is fun driving in the city with this car. Alto 800 generates 47.3 power against a maximum torque of 69 NM. The gearshifts work fine when moving in small and medium speeds and behave in a very disciplined manner.
However, the engine becomes noisy and can be easily felt in the cabin once the car achieves 100 kmph speed. The smooth functioning of the five-speed manual transmission helps to change gears with ease. Maruti has definitely improved the driving experience with this new enhanced engine.
Alto 800 is conferred with an all new design and is way ahead in terms of look and styling compared to its previous version. There are front grille and headlight pairs that give a contemporary style and look to the car. The side of the car has an elegant shoulder line which runs neatly from front to the rear end of the car. Alto 800 comes fitted with an R12 145/80 dimension tyres. The car also comes with a large windscreen on the rear end with a Suzuki logo and a keyhole in the center hump.
Alto 800 is more airy and spacious inside with increased dimensions(3430*1515*1475). The plastics used, however, are of average quality. The dashboard comes with a touch of chrome and new advanced panels. Seats are very comfortable and offer better headroom than older versions.
The steering comes with mounted audio controls and is not tilt adjustable. There is a 12 V power socket, single DIN music system, an efficient air conditioner, power windows, remote boot opener, wide glove box and bottle holders on the front. The boot is 177 litres and can accommodate most of the luggage for short journeys.
Performance and Handling
The car gets a new 800cc petrol engine, which is BSIV compliant and delivers a fuel economy of 24.7kmpl, 9 percent more than the previous engine. The base version of the Alto 800 doesn’t even have an air conditioner. Maruti Suzuki also offers a CNG variant with many buyers opting for premium models over entry-level cars for the diesel or alternative fuel options. With CNG, the Alto is expected to run 33.44km per kg, an improvement of 10 per cent.
Braking and Safety
The car is upgraded with disc and drum brakes on the front and rear parts. There is a gas filled McPherson Strut on the front wheels. Alto 800 still lacks ABS(Anti-lock Braking System) and EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution System) but still the brake is firm enough for urban traffic conditions. Only the driver gets an airbag.
Overall, Maruti Suzuki has done a commendable job with Alto 800. Alto 800 is undoubtedly one of the best options available to the India customers in the extremely competitive small car segment. Maruti may lag behind its competitors in terms of looks, design, and the interior comforts; however, the brand value and a very competitive price with a class-leading mileage will be a deciding factor for Alto 800 to maintain its lead over all the others. Unlike in Alto, Maruti Suzuki is offering the new version in six colors: blue, grey, silver, red, frost blue and white.
Alto 800 is one of the best four wheel drive for city roads but the same cannot be said for highways. Hyundai Eon has a slight edge over Maruti Alto 800 in terms of interiors, design and boot space. It all boils down to the after sales service and the local market reach that may help Maruti Alto 800 to position itself as the market leader.
