Toyota launched its premium SUV first in South Africa in 2005. Since launch it remains the best-selling vehicle; it was introduced in India in 2009. It got a 3 litre engine. New generation SUV comes to retain the lead in full-size premium SUV segment, on a new platform that offers more rigidity and better handling. It possesses new design and borrows the look from Lexus.
SPECIFICATIION & VARIANTS
The all new Fortuner comes in both the Petrol and Diesel engine; it had only diesel engine in the previous version. Now we have six variants, 2.7 litre petrol engine, that is taken from the Innova Crysta, has both manual and automatic transmission. The 2.8 litre diesel has two 2 wheel drive and two 4 wheel drive options. The petrol engine develops 164 bhp of power and 245Nm of torque. The 2.8 litre turbo diesel engine develops 174 bhp of power and 420 Nm of torque for six speed manual and 450 Nm of torque for six speed automatic. The F1 inspired paddle shift, the Eco and Power mode make the driving easy. It claims an added advantage of having iMT mode, that is, the intelligent manual transmission mode, on manual version of the diesel Fortuner.

The new Fortuner comes in a completely sporty outlook. It has the BI- BEAM LED headlamps. The LED light guides with AERO fins. There are LED daytime running lamps. Headlamps surrounded by chromes add the masculine look of the SUV. The re-designed bumper gets a new black air dam. The fog lamps housings are surrounded by thick curve aluminium accents. The top variant has the rear parking sensors. The floating pillar- less roof design makes the SUV more attractive. The rear end gets a slim- cut treatment with sleek tail lamps.
The new Fortuner has a boot capacity of 296 litre that can be extended while folding the rear seats. It can be folded with one touch of the lever. There is the electrically controlled Power Back Door with memory and jam protection.
Toyota has re-designed the cabin as well. New dashboard has a multi- information display. IT has the 7’infotainment with satellite navigation. The vertically- oriented central console has a touchscreen entertainment system and automatic AC controls. The steering wheel is three spokes with leather- wraps and audio controls. We have intelligent key for smart entry and push button start. Leather covered central console and LED co- ordinated cabin light for better visibility at night add the beauty of the interior. Armrest with cup holders in the middle row and accessory sockets in all rows increase the interior comfort and luxury. The third row has become more spacious and it is easy to enter into the back row with one touch folding of the second row seat.
Fortuner contains all the safety features that we expect from a premium SUV. There is 7 airbags, Active Traction Control, Vehicle Stability Control, Down Hill Assist Control and Hill Assist Control. We have the ABS, EBD and Brake Assist.
You can have your favorite SUV in seven colors, Phantom Brown, Super White, Attitude Black, Avant- Garde Bronze, Grey Metallic, Silver Metallic and White Pearl Crystal Shine.
Ford Endeavour puts the highest challenge for the Fortuner. Other competitors are Mitsubishi Pajero, Honda CR-V, and Hyundai Santa fe.
Fortuner is priced over Endeavour; still it rules the market because of the brand name.
