Michio Suzuki founded the Suzuki Loom Works in a small cottage in 1909 and it was recognised as Suzuki’s entry into the machine manufacturing field. In 1952, Suzuki made its first motorised bicycle that was designed to be inexpensive and easy to maintain. The 36 cc two stroke engine was clipped to the frame of a conventional bicycle. Suzuki established its famous ‘S’ emblem in 1958. Later, the sensational T20 Super Six put Suzuki on the international map with its 250cc two stroke twin with six speed gear box. In 1976 Suzuki released its first GS750 four cylinder bike and it was followed by the futuristic GSX1100S Katana. The bike’s aggressive styling and superb performance made it a huge sales success. Suzuki’s popular GSX1300R Hayabusa entered the market in 1999 with liquid cooled in-line 4 cylinder engine. In 2014 Suzuki introduced V-Strom 1000 ABS as the first motorcycle with traction control system.
Suzuki Motor Corporation, the motorcycle giant in Japan has introduced bikes and scooters in the Indian market. In 1982, the joint-venture between Suzuki Motor Corporation and TVS Motor Company incorporated and started production of two wheelers in India. After parting ways with TVS in 2001 the company was re-entered as Suzuki Motorcycle India Private Limited. In India Suzuki operates in three main segment including motorcycles, automobiles and others. Suzuki’s Indian line-up includes new locally assembled Hayabusa and the entire range of Suzuki superbikes-V-Strom, GSX-S1000 and GS-S1000F, Intruder M1800R etc. Suzuki has a prominent place as the provider of scooter and commuter motorcycles in India; Gixxer, Gixxer SF, Access, Hayate and Let’s.
