With a disease like Alzheimer’s that can slowly eat away the memories of a person, maybe it’s time you try looking into the benefits of olive oil. 

A Mediterranean diet that is rich in plant-based foods is linked with a list of benefits and even the lower incidence of dementia. Researchers have now discovered that Olive oil reduces inflammation and moreover it activates a process called autophagy. Autophagy is a process by which cells break down and clear out intracellular debris and other harmful toxins, such as amyloid plaques and tau tangles, that are classic markers for the onset of Alzheimer’s disease.

But how exactly does consumption of extra virgin oil help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease? It was found that certain elements present in olive oil could drive out the abnormal Alzheimer’s disease proteins out of the brain.

The answer was found within the Mediterranean countries. While Alzheimer’s Disease affected around 30 million people worldwide, the number was significantly lesser in Mediterranean countries. Initially, the scientists believed that it was the high concentration of healthful mono-saturated fats in olive oil. But later, something else popped up. It was actually a protective-agent like substance called oleocanthal, which had effects that protected the nerve cells from a certain damage that usually occurs in Alzheimer’s disease.

An experiment was carried out to find if the substance oleocanthal could help reduce the accumulation of beta-amyloid, a factor highly responsible for causing AD in the brain region. The results showed that oleocanthal boosted production of two proteins and key enzymes that was found to be critical in eliminating beta-amyloid in the brain region. 

Researchers finally concluded 2 benefits of Olive oil-  

    • Olive oil has the potential to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s Disease.

    • Olive oil also had the ability to decrease the risk of neurodegenerative dementia.

The study was carried out by Amal Kaddoumi and a team of researchers.

Hard as it may be to believe, olive oil can up to some extent cure this deadly disease called cancer.

Extra virgin oil or EVOO, known primarily for its health benefits has now been found to help through the rapid destruction of cancer cells. Researchers have proven that the oleocanthal compound found in EVOO causes cell death in cancerous cells.

Researchers discovered that the destruction effect of the oleocanthal in cancerous cells was seen through its reaction with the lysosomes of the cell(the cell’s disposal system). The oleocanthal breaks the cancer cell lysosomes causing cell death within a period of 30 minutes or an hour while sparing the un-cancerous cells and leaving them unharmed. 

Because the oleocanthal was able to target and destroy cancer cells while simultaneously sparing healthy cells convinced researchers that this alone could prove an ideal alternative for people willing to go for therapeutic cancer treatment. 

Researchers also point out that this can be achieved if an individual tried taking up a Mediterranean diet which is especially rich in extra virgin oil. Famously known for its association with reduced risks of different kinds of cancer, the Mediterranean diet’s high oleocanthal content might be the secret ingredient that is actually taking up the job of fighting the disease.

Olive oil and other olive related products can help prevent type 2 Diabetes !!

Researchers have now discovered that not just olive oils but any olive related product itself could help counter and prevent type 2 diabetes.

A research team discovered that the olive-derived compound oleuropein helped the body to secrete more insulin, a central signaling molecule in the body that controls metabolism. The very same compound also detoxified another signaling molecule called amylin that was responsible for the excess production and formation of harmful aggregates in type 2 diabetes. Through both these ways, the oleuropein component could help prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes.

Studies are still being carried out for a final confirmation regarding this particular discovery of olives being the cure for people suffering from type 2 diabetes. 

The study was carried out Bin Xiu , an assistant professor of biochemistry in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and a team of researchers.

Olive Oil can help in treating Peptic Ulcer Disease !!

Another benefit that Olive oil can provide is helping in curing the Peptic Ulcer Disease !! The benefits of extra virgin olive oil an element in the Mediterranean Diet may now have a role in helping to prevent and treat Helicobacter pylori (H.pylori) infections, which are responsible for causing millions of people to suffer from gastritis and peptic ulcer disease each year.

Simple foods or even drinks such as green tea, cranberry juice, and even other natural foods prevent the growth of H.pylori, a problem that infects the stomach lining leading researchers to recommend individuals to consume more of these foods. But this has only made researchers curious as to see how Mr. Olive Oil could handle the H.pylori case.

Researchers have now found out that under simulated conditions, the healthful phenolic compounds in extra virgin oil could remain stable in the acidic environment of the stomach even for a period of several hours. Upon conducting an experiment in the labs using laboratory cultures, a scientist noted that these substances had a strong anti-bacterial effect against not 1 but 8 strains of H.pylori including antibiotic-resistant strains.

Taking steps to the next level, researchers are now curious as to see the results of considering extra virgin olive oil as a chemoprotective agent for curing peptic ulcer or gastric cancer.
