August 22 : Dahi Handi 2019 stands to be one of the biggest sportive events of India during the auspicious festival of Krishna Janmashtami 2019 . As the festival will be celebrated on August 24, 2019, people practice and take part in this acrobatic celebration of Dahi Handi.
It is generally considered that dahi or makhan was one of the favourite foods of Lord Krishna. So, a Janmashtami without an energy filled Dahi Handi function is considered incomplete.
Dahi means curd and this is stored in a pot. As per mythology, Little Krishna was a mischievous lad who loved to steal curd from the earthen pots. Sometimes he would break them, to get his share of foodie delight.
For this, an earthen pot is tied up high from the ground. It would be filled with curd mostly. Nowadays, girls also take part in such events.
After this, boys usually form a circle, then the next set of boys climb onto them, This way a human pyramid is built upwards but in tapering style.
These are a bunch of girls taking part in the Dahi Handi event.
Boys get on other backs until the top most boy can touch or reach out the pot filled with Dahi. Once done, they jump down.
Their teammates will catch from below. This game requires a lot of unity and team spirit.
This event got its name Dahi Handi because of the nature of the play. Handi means a group. So, a group of boys team up together to break the pot and get the Dahi. This pic shows the boys have reached back down and their hair is sticky with all the curd.
Usually, now many Handis are formed and the group that can reach and break the pot win the competition.
The boy who stands right on top is termed as Govinda. So, finally it is the duty of the Govinda to break the pot.
The fun gears up when the rest of the other teams try to stop the group from building the pyramid and also reaching the final point- the Dahi pot.
For this, they spray water, try their bes to distract the boys from their goal. Since this is a game that needs concentration and balance, a small distraction can make the game go haywire. The Handi that reaches and breaks the pot in the shortest time wins the competition. They are usually gifted with cash prizes.
These are a bunch of blind children who are all ready with their first round of the human pyramid.
Wow, the next round of girls have reach the pot. A great feat in spite of their incapability.
And yes, they have broken the pot , which completes the festival of Sri Krishna Jayanti.
It is lovely to watch as their teachers and caretakers overlooks and help out these bold children take then steps back to the ground.
