This is a very useful recipe for people who do not want to use coconut for making sambhar.


1. Lemon sized tamarind
2. 1 cup tuvar dal, 1/2 cup moong dal.
3. Mixed Vegetables(Yellow pumpkin,drum
stick, 1-2 big onions, carrot etc.)

4. Paste of 1 green chillie, few curry leaves,
and a small piece ginger, 3 tsps. sambhar
powder available in the market( brands
like 777, MTR etc.)
5. 1 finely cut tomato, coriander leaves for


1. Put the dals in a thick vessel,add a little
turmeric powder,enough water and place
it in the pressure cooker,cover with a
plate. Put the tamarind also in vessel with
a little water & place it above the plate.
Cover the pressure cooker,Wait for 3
whistles & keep it in sim for 15 mts. After
the steam is released, open the cooker,
mash the dals well and extract the
tamarind juice and keep aside.
2. In a pressure pan add a little oil and add
the cut vegetables, the paste and shallow
fry for 10 mts.Add the tomato. Now add
turmeric, salt, hing,sambhar powder.Fry
again for 5 mts.Now add the tamarind
juice , cover the pressure pan and wait
for 2 whistles.When steam is released
open the pan and add the dal,add water for
proper consistency and boil well. Season
with mustard seeds and garnish with
coriander leaves.
